Summary

At present, energy supply is a topic discussed worldwide. Traditional structures are undergoing rapid changes, as raw material supply is currently experiencing a deep transformation as a consequence of climate change as well as political and economic factors. This calls for urgent action and political as well as economic considerations aimed at attaining self-sufficiency in the field of energy. One reason for the special attention given to these processes by the general public and politicians can be ascribed to the paramount importance of energy supply for the stability of a country’s economy and society. However, different countries have widely differing approaches to this worldwide “mega issue”. In China, India and the USA, the heavyweights in the league of countries recording high levels of greenhouse gas emissions, the central motivations for change are economic growth and safe supply, whereas in Europe, and especially in Germany, the sustainability of the energy supply system constitutes one of the main drivers of this development.
