Summary

New and innovative exhaust aftertreatment systems for the reduction of nitrogen oxides (NOx) are a key element for the commercial launch of diesel applications in North America.

For heavy passenger cars and SUVs urea-SCR based systems are the system of choice. For medium sized and light passenger cars the NOx-storage catalyst or lean NOx trap (LNT) is the preferred solution. In 2006 the first LNT-based application has been launched complying with tier 2 bin 8 standards.

In this paper we discuss the main development approaches for NOx-control for the Volkswagen Jetta 2.0L TDI which complies with the tier 2 bin 5 / LEV2 emission standards. Results from modelgas testing, engine bench characterization and vehicle testing will be presented.

The development of the LNT-based aftertreatment concept will be discussed in detail.

The main development goals for the LNT-formulation are a broadening of the temperature window, improvement of the thermal stability as well as a reduced desulfation temperature.

The introduction of new catalyst technologies require comprehensive system integration and optimization efforts which need to be addressed together by the OEM and its supplier.
