Summary
Diesel engines are an important cornerstone in the BMW EfficientDynamics strategy. Thanks to good customer acceptance, BMW diesel engines make a major contribution to the reduction of CO2 emissions. Development objectives of a new generation of diesel engines were further fuel consumption reduction as well as an improvement in the power characteristics; the conditions for compliance with the next stages of emissions legislation were also to be established. Last but not least, another goal was to enhance the flexibility of the coordinated manufacture of diesel and gasoline engines with the implementation of a new engine modular kit.
