Summary

Different boosting systems are analyzed that offer the potential to improve transient response, pull away torque and overall performance. After this introduction the paper focuses on the electric driven compressor technology as a pre-stage to the conventional turbocharger. On a special test rig, the performance of different electric driven compressors have been evaluated. Engine dyno and vehicle tests have been performed as well and the potential to rise the engine torque, improve vehicle acceleration elasticity and to enhance cold start capability were demonstrated. In addition, further development needs have been defined. The vehicle testing involved a passenger car and a commercial vehicle. Corresponding load profiles of the E-Booster have been defined and the requirements of the electric powernet have been analyzed.
