Summary
Since the reserves of crude oil are limited, the production of petroleum can be estimated to reach its maximum in the next 20 to 40 years, and the emission of global-warming gases, especially CO2, is becoming a global issue. Fuel efficiency requirements for automobiles are reviewed and are becoming much more stringent all over the world. To improve the engine’s thermal efficiency, engine lean burn operation is one of the most effective technologies. Toyota thinks that hybrid technology is the basis for the ultimate low fuel consumption vehicle. When the new lean burn engine is applied to a hybrid power train, improvement of the thermal efficiency at high engine operating loads is required to reduce further CO2 emission, which means that reduction of NOx emission at high engine loads is required at the same time.
