Summary

In spring 2006 Bosch will launch series production of the secondgeneration directinjection systems. When comparing the performance of this second generation to the expectations that were attached to the gasoline directinjection concept during the 1990s one notices that the emphasis of the development efforts has been enhanced. Initially, the almost only aim of these efforts was to establish a pure leancombustion concept meeting the European CO2 targets. By now, these objectives have been extended to include the concepts for more driving pleasure and reduced emissions. Implementing this diversity of concepts requires a flexible set of costefficient secondgeneration DI components; highly variable highpressure injection valves and pumps represent the centerpiece of this set of components. The applicability of these components for the most diverse combustion methods and packaging situations is rounded off by a further developed electronic control unit with increased computing power. This renders possible their application on homogeneous and sprayguided naturally aspirated gasoline engines as well as on DI supercharged engines and even on SULEV and PZEV projects. Going beyond these current applications the directinjection method represents the ideal basis for the further development of existing or entirely new combustion methods. This includes further development of sprayguided combustion methods, further downsizing of the gasoline engine as well as development of new combustion methods such as CAI / HCCI.

Lectures from the International Vienna Motor Symposium can be ordered from the Austrian Society of Automotive Engineers (ÖVK). Lectures can only be purchased in the form of the complete conference documents, individual lectures are not available.
When placing an order, please note the year/name of the event (e.g. "45th International Vienna Motor Symposium 2024") for the further ordering process.
