Summary

For more than 100 years, the automotive industry experienced relatively stable “powertrain DNA.” Vehicles typically incorporated an internal combustion engine mated to a transmission to transmit torque to the wheels. That solution remains the dominant powertrain technology, but its standardization was not always certain. Multiple propulsion solutions competed for dominance during the first two decades of the 20th century and many are being retested to determine which solutions will carry the industry through the next 100 years.
