Summary
The discussion of technologies for the drive trains of the future for passenger cars features terms such as downsizing, hybridization, variable valve train, electrification etc. ever more frequently. In the public domain, the impression arises that these are competing technologies and should be used as alternatives to each other. This paper will attempt to show the reasons why, from an engine technology perspective, the use of variable valve trains is desirable. A systematic overview of the variable valve trains currently in use is given. By means of selected examples, the function and overall system influence of engine technology are described. In addition, the relationship of variable valve trains to other technologies is explained, together with the contribution they can make in combination with these technologies to further improvements in internal combustion engines.
