Summary
As a result of future CO2 emissions targets, the power density and the mean effective pressure, i.e., the thermal and mechanical load on the pistons, can also be expected to increase further for diesel engines. The high thermal conductivity of the material means that aluminum pistons are well able to meet the performance requirements. However, measures for optimizing the cooling and strengthening of the critically stressed rim of the combustion bowl are necessary. Initial results with locally fiber-reinforced pistons indicate that peak cylinder pressures above 200 bar will be possible.
