Summary

The automotive industry is currently going through one of the most challenging phases in its more than 140-year history. However, these challenges are also creating opportunities. As far as the current key challenges for the automotive industry are concerned, both the speed at which new innovations are coming onto the market, as well as the diversity of technologies
have increased significantly.

Additionally, we are experiencing dramatically increased volatilities. This is affecting not only the legal and market policy framework, but also the purchasing behavior of customers and the speed at which technological changes are implemented in the markets over time and region. The transition to electromobility also brings with it a new form of volatility: e.g. a billion-dollar investment in a battery gigafactory could become obsolete relatively quickly if the demand decreases or a new, better cell chemistry or an improved cell structure emerges.
Battery technology is still a long way from being stabilized. There will continue to be new innovations in quick succession. All in all, this makes business more difficult to plan.
The balance between localization and regionalization is different than it was just a few years ago. And there is also more competition from companies that were not previously in the automotive industry. We therefore need to adapt flexibly the global distribution of our resources.
