Summary
Future CO2 scenarios represent a great challenge to the automotive industry. Various OEM’s respond to this challenge in different ways. For large displacement engines stratified combustion is used. In the US cylinder deactivation was established as successful measure to improve fuel consumption. The majority of European OEM’s favours downsizing or downspeeding. In doing so, some concepts are quite advanced and use engines with very low cylinder number (twin cylinder) raising challenging demands to NVH behaviour.
