Summary

For the fifth generation Golf platform, a new 2.0l TDI high end Diesel engine has been developed with unit injectors. A first for Volkswagen Diesels using four valves per cylinder, these 100 kW (Touran) and 103 kW (Audi A3) versions also comply with the EU4 exhaust requirements. The cross flow aluminium cylinder head has tangential inlet ports with an approximately 45 degree rotated valve layout and vertical valves. Tooth belt driven, twin overhead camshafts drive the unit injectors and the valves by trailing rockers arms with rollers. The Bosch “UI-P2” unit injector system is also a new development with numerous functional improvements like reduced injection noise and increased pressure. The bigger displacement has been achieved by increasing the bore from 79.5 mm to 81.0 mm. With the transition to the four valve technology combined with design improvements the successful unit injector engines feature better fuel consumption and exhaust emissions as well as enhanced on road performance. The introduced 100 kW and 103 kW engines, the first representatives of the new 4V-TDI engine generation, made their debut in the Touran and in the Audi A3, later followed by the Golf V and in the Passat successor as well as in the Audi A4 and A6. Increased power output variations are planned as well.
