Summary
In recent years, enormous improvements in thermodynamically relevant diesel engine components (turbocharging, fuel injection and exhaust gas recirculation) and designs have led to significant improvements in fuel economy, performance and exhaust emissions.
Despite the vast torque potential, however, further improvements in diesel engine fuel economy via load-point shifting, were not possible due to emissions requirements and the driveability demands of customers. These limits can now be significantly expanded through targeted thermodynamic designs and new, innovative technological components.
The new four-cylinder concept presented here enables considerably reduced fuel consumption, by means of operating-point shifting while retaining drivability and performance as standard for the vehicle class. We discuss the premises and the method for downspeeding and downsizing approaches, describe the challenging thermodynamic requirements, and explain the details of our innovative concept. Chief among these are fuel injection and turbocharging techniques.
Lectures from the International Vienna Motor Symposium can be ordered from the Austrian Society of Automotive Engineers (ÖVK). Lectures can only be purchased in the form of the complete conference documents, individual lectures are not available.
When placing an order, please note the year/name of the event (e.g. "45th International Vienna Motor Symposium 2024") for the further ordering process.
Members of the Austrian Society of Automotive Engineers have access to all lectures of the International Vienna Motor Symposia.
