Summary
The key challenges to safety-critical software development in the automotive domain are increasing complexity, short development cycles and increasing quality and safety requirements. An incremental and iteration-oriented safety-critical software development process can address these challenges by structuring development steps into smaller, concise and repeatable development cycles which present a way to develop both a software system and its safety argument iteratively. Traditionally, safety-critical software development processes use a rigid and heavy-weight process such as the V-model. This paper proposes a software development process called Automotive Safety Software Development Process (ASSDP) that addresses these concerns and is specifically designed to meet the tight boundary conditions of safety-critical software development.
