Summary

Compound gears, in „splitgear“ or „decoupled“ configuration, are an interesting option to improve NVH behavior of an internal combustion engine: “rattling” as well as “whining” can be improved significantly. A motored engine test rig is used to validate different configurations of such systems and their impact on noise, vibration and harshness (NVH). In combination with powder metal technology, the comprising components can be manufactured in a very efficient way. The gear module requires an assembly process and in some cases a vulcanization process to combine the single components. Customer requirements and torque loads can be fulfilled over the whole product lifetime without any significant influence on the performance of the gear system. The influence on aging and endurance behavior was analyzed in a systematic way. Such systems and modules are in serial production in camshaft drives and mass balancer drives for internal combustion engines. Different applications and customer expectations require distinct designs and configurations. The systems can be pre-validated at Miba where various test rigs are available. The validation results of Miba show a very good correlation to customer tests in actual vehicles. Further potential is seen for transmission applications. Especially for electrical driving, NVH requirements for gears will become increasingly relevant. Such concepts are currently under investigation in different development projects.

Lectures from the International Vienna Motor Symposium can be ordered from the Austrian Society of Automotive Engineers (ÖVK). Lectures can only be purchased in the form of the complete conference documents, individual lectures are not available.
