Summary
The high potential of Controlled Auto Ignition with Gasoline engines - to combine excellent fuel economy with extremely low engine out emission - is already known from various basic research approaches. The real challenge, however, is the practical application under real world operating conditions and typical production constraints. The Controlled Auto Ignition System AVL CSI was designed in view of minimum changes to existing pro-duction engines, large volume production feasibility and cost effectiveness. This is pro-vided by a design philosophy to utilise the components necessary for Auto Ignition also to improve fuel economy with spark ignited operation. The high sensitiveness of Auto Ignition towards production and operation tolerances can be fully compensated by cylinder- and cycle individual combustion control. While keeping the fuel economy benefit of lean unthrottled operation, the CSI reduces by a partially variable valve train and a cylinder pressure controlled EMS the NOx engine out emission towards such an extend, that future emission limits will be met even without DENOx catalyst. By fully utilising the CSI-system components both in auto and spark ignited operation, a highly attractive system for fuel economy improvement is created.
Lectures from the International Vienna Motor Symposium can be ordered from the Austrian Society of Automotive Engineers (ÖVK). Lectures can only be purchased in the form of the complete conference documents, individual lectures are not available.
When placing an order, please note the year/name of the event (e.g. "45th International Vienna Motor Symposium 2024") for the further ordering process.
Members of the Austrian Society of Automotive Engineers have access to all lectures of the International Vienna Motor Symposia.
