Summary

This paper presents an in-wheel motor with an integrated braking unit for electric vehicles. The electric drive is based on an innovative radial flux dual rotor technology, offering increased torque density and efficiency while significantly reducing material usage and manufacturing costs. Combined with an integrated SiC inverter, it can achieve up to a 20% increase in range compared to conventional systems.

The ring-shaped motor design allows for the integration of mechanical friction brakes, resulting in a lightweight, compact, and highly efficient drive-brake unit (DBU) through comprehensive mechanical and control integration. The innovative control concept and thermal management of the DBU enable coverage of all relevant vehicle use cases, including high-load cycles and extended downhill drives.

The functionality and efficiency of the drive unit have been validated through bench testing. The next step involves vehicle integration and testing through field trials.
