Summary
The hybridization of the 911 is another milestone in the development of Porsche's six-cylinder boxer engines. The innovative electric turbocharger (eTurbo) combines the performance of a turbocharged engine with the responsiveness of a naturally aspirated engine and launch performance comparable that of battery-electric vehicles. In addition to the integration of the 400-volt electric turbocharger, the boxer engine (Figure 1) has been completely redeveloped. The integration of the electric motor into the Porsche dual-clutch transmission (PDK transmission) and compact design of the boxer engine enable the integration of the high-voltage components without having to change the main dimensions of the 911 and help to maintain gross vehicle weight typical of a sports car. Examples include cylinder crankcases and cylinder heads with a high degree of integration, the elimination of the belt drive, the design as a mono-turbo and the efficient design of the air filter and intercooler. Furthermore, the increased loads were taken into account by designing the engine accordingly. The combustion process and gas exchange were consistently designed for operation with stoichiometric air conditions in the entire map area. The new boxer engine has genes from its predecessor in many places, such as injection via piezo injectors with a central position or the central oil supply for connecting rod bearing lubrication adopted from the GT cars. With their performance and innovative exhaust gas purification, the new engines ensure the future viability of the Porsche boxer engine.
