Summary
Mazda is pursuing carbon neutrality through a multi‑solution approach combining BEVs, PHEVs, and high‑efficiency ICEs using carbon‑neutral fuels. This study evaluates the feasibility of pairing microalgae‑derived fuels with on‑board CO2 capture to further reduce ICE emissions.
Algal fuels can lower well‑to‑wheel CO2 emissions by ~90%, while engine exhaust—containing CO2 concentrations far higher than ambient air—offers a low‑energy source for separation. A dual‑bed temperature swing adsorption (TSA) system using zeolite 13X was developed and tested with real engine exhaust. Phase‑change‑assisted thermal management enabled rapid adsorption–desorption cycling.
A system and its key technologies capable of achieving a CO2 capture ratio exceeding 20% under WLTC‑equivalent conditions—while maintaining energy consumption significantly lower than that of direct air capture (DAC)—have been developed and demonstrated.
