Summary
Within the scope of the Volkswagen brand’s engine strategy, the modular diesel engine system (MDB) is being expanded with a new 3-cylinder unit. The focal points of the development were a significant weight reduction compared with the preceding engine, combined with the lowest possible fuel consumption and improved performance. The new engine is set up for power output ranging from 40-60 kW/l and therefore able to replace 4-cylinder engines with lower specific power output. It marks the first application of a weight-optimised crankcase made from gravity-die-cast aluminium.
