Summary
Brake wear particles are widely acknowledged as a primary contributor to road transportation's particulate matter emissions, presenting well-established health and environmental concerns. While the upcoming Euro7 brake dyno approach offers commendable reproducibility due to tightly controlled laboratory conditions, the inherent variability in real-world driving conditions necessitates on-road measurements to gain a more comprehensive understanding of actual emission patterns. In this study, we introduce an innovative methodology for quantifying brake emissions under real-world driving conditions, employing a conventional passenger vehicle on public roads. Our approach incorporates a minimally invasive brake wear sampling system that exerts no influence on brake temperature, coupled with particle instrumentation uniquely tailored for on-board measurements. Equipped with a range of sensors to capture critical parameters such as brake pressure, vehicle speed, temperature, ambient conditions, and on-board brake emissions instrumentation, our methodology bridges existing knowledge gaps by establishing correlations between brake dynamometer tests and on-road assessments.
