Summary
Hyundai-Kia plans to launch a new three-cylinder Smartstream 1.0L turbocharged engine to complete the next-generation gasoline engine line-up. The new engine has been developed more suitable for downsizing with highly improved fuel economy, eco-friendly features and competitive performance.
The new engine has the most advanced Smartstream technology by technically optimized combination of continuously variable valve duration (CVVD), LP-EGR and integrated thermal management (ITM) systems.
The CVVD system, which is Hyundai-Kia’s exclusively global leading technology applied on 1.5L and 1.6L Smartstream gasoline engine family also controls the intake valve timing and duration simultaneously to operate the engine in optimized cycle between Otto and Atkinson. The LP-EGR system with Differential pressure Control Valve (DCV) allows combustion at a wide range of engine speeds and loads with better fuel efficiency through exhaust gas recirculation. The ITM system provides reliable and effective thermal management and suppressing the knock tendency by appropriately distributing coolant flow to each component for cooling and by adjusting the engine temperature according to engine conditions. The remarkable fuel efficiency improvement thanks to the combination of these three core technologies has been achieved in the main driving area.
Many additional technologies are also applied to reduce friction loss. Water jacket insert was redesigned to increase temperature of cylinder liner wall. The continuously variable discharge oil pump and low viscosity oil was used to reduce engine friction effectively.
The direct gasoline fuel injection system with a high pressure of 350 bar improves the homogeneity of mixture in the combustion chamber, meeting the most stringent emission regulations, including PN.
The new Smartstream 1.0L Turbo GDi engine was sublimated with more advanced Hyundai-Kia’s unique technology distinct from other competitors. The Hyundai-Kia’s newly released vehicles with the Smartstream 1.0L Turbo GDi engine will dominate European compact vehicle market in the near future.
