Summary
With the newly developed D15 Diesel engine and the derived E18 gas engine MAN introduces a 9 l engine platform which ideally completes the engine portfolio above the 7 l and below the 12 l series. The D15 was specifically planned for weight-sensitive transporting tasks in the heavy duty sector and for that fulfills in an optimal way the requirements to compact package, weight and efficiency. The engine will be introduced nearly simultaneously in the MAN TGS/X truck, in the new MAN Lion’s City urban bus as well as in external off-road applications.
Focus of the development were amongst others low complexity and low total-cost-of-ownership (TCO) in combination with minimized weight. Therefore Euro 6 emissions and the MAN-typical excellent low-end-torque are achieved by means of single-stage turbo charging, direct charging-air cooling and an efficiency-optimized 2500 bar injection system. In addition, despite the high emission requirements external exhaust gas recirculation could be waived for the Diesel version. Robustness features like the design for 230 bar combustion peak pressure, the jointed cam shaft or the deliberate decision for stand-alone system components for service-friendly engine layout also secure the customer-friendly TCO-level.
Besides conventional weight reduction measures, an optimal weight-to-power-ratio is realized by the small cylinder head height and the first time design of selected load-carrying parts in aluminum. By this the D15 is capable of a substantial contribution to the weight compensation in modern hybrid-drive-trains, such as the EfficientHybrid in the new MAN Lion’s City
In this paper the concept, the design and the functional properties of the new 9 l engine series will be described.
