Summary

Under the name "Diesel Revolution" DENSO developed an advanced common rail diesel system, which promotes the benefits of the diesel powertrains in terms of fuel consumption and drivability, and offers advantages in terms of fuel robustness. At the same time it is important to optimize the cost and complexity of the diesel drive - so that diesel engines remain competitive also in the future global market. Because of increasingly stringent worldwide emission limits the topic of aftertreatment for the reduction of nitrogen oxides is playing a more and more significant role. Consequently, also in this field new solutions which enable reduced complexity and increased robustness are required. In this paper, two innovative technologies will be presented: A new improved combustion method, which thanks to special nozzle hole geometry in conjunction with a new further optimized fast actuated robust common rail injector can reduce the heat losses during combustion - which increases the efficiency of combustion. Secondly, an innovative plasma based aftertreatment system, which realizes high NOx conversion rate even at low exhaust gas temperature. By combining the two technologies, a diesel EMS (engine management system) can be proposed. This can realize up to 7% effective fuel consumption reduction with NOx conversion rates of up to 80% during the WLTC drive-cycle are achieved.
