Summary

Emission standards continuous severization and public awareness are requiring solutions for ICE vehicles emitting extremely low emissions under all boundary conditions. The low temperature/ cold start operation is one of the most critical phases. Catalyst heating technology is very efficient under these conditions. This paper is showing product technology as well as the main challenges to be addressed in development and validation. The key points of the product validation are presented, showing design rules and critical parameters. Engine and exhaust models are used to define the power requirements for the heater. These simulations have been confirmed by real testing. They are in addition used in combination with product testing as software inputs to insure a safe operation of the heater and identify the key characteristics of the SW and HW controls.

Lectures from the International Vienna Motor Symposium can be ordered from the Austrian Society of Automotive Engineers (ÖVK). Lectures can only be purchased in the form of the complete conference documents, individual lectures are not available.
When placing an order, please note the year/name of the event (e.g. "45th International Vienna Motor Symposium 2024") for the further ordering process.
