Summary

With this paper, Volkswagen is providing first insights into its new modular e-drive kit (MEB). The message is: Volkswagen is putting enormous energy and commitment into the electrification of mobility for a broad sector of the population.
Volkswagen also points to the modular electrification kit (MEB) as the commercial and technological backbone of the upcoming electric offensive. By the end of 2022, production of 27 MEB vehicles for Group brands will start worldwide. According to VW’s “Roadmap E”, the plan is for a total of more than 80 electrified models by 2025, around 50 of which will be fully electric. The MEB is thus the basis for the industrialization of electric mobility within the Volkswagen Group.
The MEB platform is a vehicle structure specifically developed by Volkswagen for electric vehicles. The chassis with various wheelbases is equipped with a flat high-voltage battery built into the floor, the electric drive with power inverter and single-speed transmission, the high-voltage wiring and the charging device. Basically, two e-drives can be installed: a permanent-magnet synchronous machine (PSM) with an output of 150 kW at the rear axle, and an asynchronous machine (ASM) with 75 kW at the front axle.
