Summary
The transition to electrification is progressing rapidly, and the market variation is creating significant complexity. China’s latest release of national passenger car strategy is emphasizing the parallel development of New Energy Vehicles (NEV) and Low Fuel Consumption Vehicle (LFCV) for the coming 15 years; targeting 40% HEV sales with 5.2L/100km (WLTC) fuel consumption in China in 2025, increasing to 50% with 4L/100km (WLTC) fuel consumption in 2035. High combustion engine efficiency and high voltage hybrid technology have been pointed out as the key enablers for achieving the low fuel consumption target. As a response to the rapid transition Geely Auto and Volvo Cars announced the merge of their existing powertrain operations into a new standalone joint venture company focused on next-generation hybrid systems [1]. The joint venture will have inhouse development and production of complete propulsion systems including software and electric components. Being a global propulsion system solution provider, it is essential to maintain and enhance a wide range of solutions to meet market-oriented customer needs, while balancing the product development expenses and plant investment. Developing a modular dedicated hybrid propulsion architecture to fulfill various vehicle segments requirements will be key to meet future demands. This paper introduces a new architecture of dedicated hybrid propulsion systems, ranging from full hybrid and plug-in hybrid to range extender applications. The propulsion system family has been optimized for creating a highly electrified customer experience with fast response, superior NVH and low fuel consumption. Systems Engineering methodology has been applied to cater for the requirements of multiple vehicle platforms and electrical architectures; a high level of modularity has been achieved minimizing the complexity for implementation. The resulting dedicated hybrid propulsion systems family will be applied in a wide range of vehicle platforms, body styles, electrical architectures and vehicle brands.
