Summary
As one of the many possible measures for CO2 reduction, VCR systems can make a particularly relevant contribution.
For a long time, VCR technology has only been granted a theoretical potential, but there are now already series production implementations and alternative approaches with a very high degree of development maturity.
With the Dual Mode VCSTM, a special solution is presented in which the VCR mechanism is integrated into a connecting rod. With this conversion, the length of the connecting rod can be adjusted in 2 steps and the compression volume can be changed. The presented solution can be integrated into existing engine families by making minor adjustments to the engine architecture. This makes it possible to continue using existing production lines without having to make major investments. This makes the Dual Mode VCSTM a cost-effective solution for significant CO2 reductions.
In this paper, the development progress and the confirmation of the concept's functionality are presented, which have been proven in fired engine tests.
Furthermore, results on consistent and fast switching behaviour with high repeat accuracy are shown.
Due to the positive development process, the Dual Mode VCSTM is already in a production development phase which focuses on durability and optimization of the function. At the end of the day, however, product success will also depend on how well the concepts can be transferred from development to industrialization. Therefore, the modular industrialization approach will also be discussed, with which it will be possible to implement series production in a scalable way.
Lectures from the International Vienna Motor Symposium can be ordered from the Austrian Society of Automotive Engineers (ÖVK). Lectures can only be purchased in the form of the complete conference documents, individual lectures are not available.
When placing an order, please note the year/name of the event (e.g. "45th International Vienna Motor Symposium 2024") for the further ordering process.
