Summary

Downsizing and Downspeeding in combination with turbocharging are known and established technologies for reducing CO2 emissions and represent state of the art technology for achieving higher engine efficiency. The demand for higher Low-End-Torque (LET) and simultaneously lower fuel consumption in operating areas of high specific power output requires compromises with respect to compression ratio selection and turbocharger sizing. This limits the achievable fuel consumption benefits. Cooled exhaust gas recirculation is a promising technology to realize further fuel consumption benefits across much of the engine operating map of turbocharged gasoline engines.
