Summary
The automotive industry currently faces a 'once in a century' paradigm shift to ensure environmental protection, energy security, and safety. DENSO has made concerted company-wide efforts to develop powertrain technologies at the core of mobility. DENSO has suggested "SMART-D" concepts, realizing zero emission by combination of "the ultimate injection system for diesel combustion evolution", "aftertreatment system evolution" and “electrified system” previously at this Symposium. With the same philosophy as DENSO’s “SMART-D” concept, DENSO proposes new “SMART-G” concepts, as innovative gasoline systems.
DENSO’s gasoline system development is focused on meeting the requirements for the global market and is aligned with the expansion of e-mobility. Aiming at “fast and complete combustion” as the main focus for the revolution of the gasoline ICE i.e. dilute combustion and high compression ratio, DENSO has been developing technologies to achieve high mixture -homogeneity and robust ignition to reduce emissions. DENSO has also focused on the development of a flexible engine core system to cover the needs of a wide range of powertrains from conventional internal combustion engine only powertrains through to full hybrids. The core system development pursues highly-efficient, less-emitting combustion by improved combustion in combination with advanced high conversion efficiency aftertreatment systems to achieve leading thermal efficiency levels and clean emissions.
DENSO has been developing the following four technological solutions to realize an innovative core system by maximizing the efficiency and contribution in each technological area:
・High Efficiency Variable Valve Train with high phasing speed, coupled with accurate, stable phasing ensuring ideal effective compression ratio is kept in any driving conditions
· Fuel injection forming highly-homogeneous sprays to maximize mixture homogeneity without wetting.
· Ignition technology for Stable flame kernel formation under any cylinder conditions by “On-demand” energy supply.
· Exhaust Aftertreatment Systems, cutting emissions by optimizing catalyst conversion efficiency in all driving conditions.
The "SMART-G" concepts exploit the full potential of the above solutions to achieve a high performance core system covering a wide range of engine applications from the "the ultimate internal combustion system: conventional internal combustion engines" to "the ultimate electrified system: full hybrid." Through the development of these technologies, DENSO is committed to addressing the forthcoming challenges for the automotive industry and contribute to society.
Lectures from the International Vienna Motor Symposium can be ordered from the Austrian Society of Automotive Engineers (ÖVK). Lectures can only be purchased in the form of the complete conference documents, individual lectures are not available.
When placing an order, please note the year/name of the event (e.g. "45th International Vienna Motor Symposium 2024") for the further ordering process.
