Summary

The rapid transformation of the personal mobility needs of the world's population and global climate change, call for fresh ideas in the mobility sector, leading to modified or completely new vehicle architectures. Hybrid and battery-only vehicles are gaining increasing acceptance and significance, because conventional internal combustion engines are becoming subject to ever tightening legislation and regulations.
In conventional powertrains, the electrification of auxiliary systems and, partly, also the traction drive, is essentially aimed at achieving an overall increase in efficiency. Conversely, where the electric powertrain is concerned, the emphasis is on energy availability and on range.
Rheinmetall Automotive AG, the successor to Kolbenschmidt Pierburg AG, has for many years worked on the electrification of auxiliary components such as demand controlled electric coolant pumps and electric oil pumps for conventional as well as alternative (e.g. hybrid) powertrains.
In response to the trend towards electric powertrains Rheinmetall Automotive AG is developing a modular battery system as well as an electric traction drive. In this paper we will introduce these new developments, and also take a look at the electrification of auxiliary systems. From this an integrated assessment regarding costs and benefits is shown.
