Summary

The following manuscript briefly describes the degrees of automation in automated driving, the demands arising on the various markets from the use of such technologies and the benefits to the customer offered by the use of driving and parking functions with a higher degree of automation.
The basis of the challenges presented here that are faced by the automotive industry in the development leap from SAE Level 2 to higher levels is provided by the description of current driver assistance systems. Alongside the most recent customer functionalities is also a brief development history of the first driver assistance systems. The Front Assist customer function developed by Volkswagen to provide forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking to mitigate or avoid rear end collisions is used here as an example of the continuous development and improvement of existing assistance systems.
The potential as well as the technical and legislative challenges associated with the leap to SAE Levels 3 and 4 are then presented within the context of two customer functions developed by Volkswagen, the Highway Pilot and Parking Garage Pilot. As well as detailing an example of a logical functional architecture along a process chain from sensor to actuator, this manuscript also provides a description of each function and its characteristics in use by the driver.
