Summary
The new diesel engine family from Mercedes-Benz was successfully launched with the base type of the OM 654 four-cylinder engine with a displacement of 1.95 liters and an output of 143 kW, hereafter referred to as the OM 654 D20, and the OM 656 six-cylinder engine. Positioned between these is the OM 654 top type with two-stage turbocharging and 180 kW. The bottom end of the portfolio is now rounded off with the here presented entry type OM 654 with 1.6-liter displacement, hereafter referred to as the OM 654 D16. In addition to achieving very low emissions and complying with RDE Stage 1 and EU 6 d temp., a key development goal for this engine was a significant CO2 reduction compared with the current base type. The advantages in terms of consumption result from the stepped-recess combustion process, which was modified to match with the smaller combustion chamber, from friction-reducing measures and from the further-developed turbocharger and very low pumping losses. The engine concept uses the modular components of the OM 654/656 diesel engine family. However, it also includes further improvements focused on reducing friction. This paper describes the engine design, further developments of the base engine for this variant, application of combustion and exhaust-gas aftertreatment as well as the achieved efficiency and performance results both on the testbench and in the vehicle.
