Summary
“KXtreme” Fasteners combine the characteristics of extreme high tensile strength with maximum ductility and therefore enable new potential for downsizing and lightweight design. Global trends in environmental protection require new engine developments that lead to higher efficiency, increased power density, combustion pressures, temperatures and loads as well as weight reduction and lower engine-internal friction. Fasteners can support this development trend! Ultra-high strength material concept: The “KXtreme” concept provides the capability in increase the clamp load by ~45 % compared to a bolt of same geometry in grade 10.9. This capability can be used in two ways: Either by avoiding upsizing of the fastener – where higher clamp load is required – or it can be used to downsize the bolt while keeping the clamp load consistent. In cooperation with FEV in Aachen, the potentials have been evaluated. In various serial production applications with big OEM’s was proven the functionality of the concept. Was based on these examples the detailed benefits are explained and further potentials in the engine development are pointed out.
