Summary
The paper presents BMW’s 6th Generation BMW eDrive Technology platform (Gen6) as a holistic advancement in electric propulsion, energy storage, and vehicle integration. Central to this development is a fully scalable battery architecture that enables optimized pack energy density, thermal management, and modular cell chemistries, paired with powertrain optimizations that maximize overall efficiency across driving cycles. We discuss packaging strategies and system integration that reduce parasitic losses, enable streamlined manufacturing, and enhance vehicle ergonomics. A key focus is on Over-the-Edge charging capabilities and the software-hardware co-design that empowers autonomous in-house hardware and software development. Experimental validation on representative Gen6 test vehicles demonstrates improvements in energy efficiency, range consistency, and charging performance, while a life-cycle perspective highlights sustainability and total-cost-ofownership benefits. The work outlines design principles and deployment guidelines for scalable BEV Powertrain architectures in premium segments.
