Summary
The Mercedes-Benz OM 656M inline six-cylinder diesel engine has undergone a systematic evolution resulting in the OM 656 Evo, with development efforts focused on achieving compliance with the forthcoming EU7 emissions legislation.
The aim was to significantly reduce exhaust emissions while simultaneously improving fuel consumption and increasing agility. The centerpiece of this evolutionary step is the first series production application of an electrically heated catalytic converter in a Mercedes-Benz Diesel engine. This component rapidly brings the exhaust aftertreatment system to its optimal operating temperature range and ensures efficient temperature maintenance over the entire driving cycle. The resulting increased exhaustgas aftertreatment effectiveness opens up new possibilities for the optimizatio of the system in general.
The continuous enhancement of robustness - achieved, for example, through active crankcase ventilation, a more durable EGR system, and an optimized water jacket in the crankcase as well as improved cylinder‑head cooling - accompanies this development and reflects the established Mercedes‑Benz quality standard.
