Summary
Ballard Power Systems has developed proprietary membrane electrode assemblies, bipolar plates, stacks, and fuel cell modules for more than forty years. From the world’s first fuel cell bus in 1993 to the world’s first fully certified fuel cell-powered marine vessel in 2023, Ballard has gained significant experience in the deployment of hydrogen fuel cell technology for heavy-duty transport applications.
This paper provides an overview of the most recent evolution of commercial fuel cell stacks and modules for heavy-duty vehicles. These developments include comprehensive improvements in manufacturing, materials, and engineering design at stack and module levels for heavy-duty performance. Cost reductions through improvements in power density and longevity of stacks and fuel cell modules are also presented.
Fuel cell buses and trucks powered by Ballard have driven over 200 million kilometers in various conditions and have proven that fuel cell is a viable solution for zero-emission mobility while delivering important data on product life cycle and operational requirements. Ongoing field experience and close cooperation with partners and customers direct Ballard’s future fuel cell engine improvements for heavy-duty mobility applications.
