Summary

In addition to powertrains for its own vehicle fleet, MAN equips a variety of customers in the fields of agriculture, railways, commercial and recreational shipping, as well as power generation with diesel and gas engines. Alternative forms of propulsion are also being discussed in these areas. As diverse as these applications are, so are the possibilities for decarbonization. Unlike passenger cars or trucks, electromobility is rarely an option. This is due to the fact that applications in agriculture as well as in the maritime sector are characterized by a significant daily energy turnover / demand. Based on the successful 24-liter V12 engine, MAN has introduced an enlarged engine with a 30-liter displacement into the first series applications. This foundation will be extensively used for a wide range of further developments.
As is well known, in addition to battery-electric drives, MAN is offering a new hydrogen engine as a zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) in commercial vehicles. Hydrogen and methanol are also being used as alternative fuels in pilot applications in the shipping and the agricultural sectors. All new energy carriers share the common challenges of insufficient infrastructure and supply security. This underscores the relevance of implementing dual-fuel technologies. For emission-free operation phases in low-load areas, hybrid systems can be used.
This paper will introduce the new MAN V12 engine, which expands the portfolio up-wards with its higher performance potential and will showcase the (bridging) technologies that MAN has developed to offer to customers usable emission reduction potentials.
