Summary
The European truck manufacturing industry has together, in an unprecedented statement, come to the conclusion that in 2040 all new trucks sold need to be fossil-free in order to reach carbon neutrality in 2050. In addition to the technological development of the new truck fleet, the detachment from fossil fuels requires a transition to fossil-free energy sources in the entire heavy duty fleet.
So far the main focus has been on the development of battery electric and fuel cell vehicles but as stated in the roadmap there will still be trucks with combustion engines and those need to run on sustainable renewable Fuels.
How much sustainable renewable fuels are needed to fulfil these needs, what is the gap to current production volumes and what legislation changes do we need to close this gap?
With the current energy and climate policies prevailing, the transport sector will continue to drive global oil demand far above the required level for the world to reach net-zero emissions by 2050. Even with the most optimistic scenarios on the electrification of transport, substantial volumes of liquid fuels will still be needed for decades. This is particularly true for long-distance transport, non-road vehicles, aviation and marine sectors, where the potential of electrification is much more limited.
