Summary
As the global energy landscape shifts toward sustainability, alternative fuels are gaining traction across various sectors. Hydrogen internal combustion engines (H₂ ICEs) offer a viable path to CO₂-neutral mobility, especially in heavy-duty (off- and on-road) and energy applications. Their unique combustion properties, such as low ignition energy, high diffusivity, and water-rich exhaust pose significant challenges for lubricant design. Pre-ignition risks, influenced by oil composition and droplet behavior, can be mitigated through optimized ash content and base oil chemistry. Water accumulation leads to corrosion and phase separation, requiring advanced emulsion stability and corrosion protection. FUCHS has developed tailored products, optional with renewable base oils, to meet these demands, validated through internal studies and OEM collaborations. This presentation outlines key engineering strategies for reliable, high-performance lubrication in H₂ ICEs, reinforcing lubricants as a critical enabler of hydrogen engine technology.
