Summary
Volkswagen’s latest plug-in hybrid drive (PHEV2) features advanced technology and increased electric range compared to its predecessor. Starting in 2025, an all-wheel-drive variant will be available. The combination of the MQBevo-PHEV2 drivetrain combined with a newly developed electric rear axle enables new functions that further optimize the driving experience. The new electric rear axle, first available in the Multivan and California, along with the advanced modular control software, allows precise and independent power distribution to each axle. This configuration offers new possibilities in the overall drivetrain strategy.
The electric rear axle has been newly developed for the Multivan eHybrid 4MOTION all-wheel drive and enables very fast and precise torque build-up if required. Thanks to an integrated disconnect clutch, the axle can be decoupled when traction assistance or track stabilization is not required, which has a positive effect on fuel consumption. To ensure that the rear axle can still contribute to propulsion even when the high-voltage battery is empty, the energy required for this is generated by the front electric motor if necessary. As a result, the traction and stability of the vehicle can be significantly improved. This is advantageous for difficult driving conditions and at low vehicle speeds, such as in city traffic or when starting off on a hill with a trailer. Comprehensive integration with the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system ensures safe all-wheel drive operation in all driving situations. All these advantages are available in electrical and hybrid mode, marking the next step towards sustainable mobility from Volkswagen.
