Summary
To maximize the appeal of BEVs, Toyota developed a dedicated powertrain which realizes long driving range. In order to enhance the driving range, highly efficient drive modules and a new high energy density battery pack have been adopted. Highly efficient drive modules have improved power consumption by utilizing low-viscosity oil to reduce friction loss, low-loss inverter elements and optimized coil/rotor shapes. In addition, newly developed battery cells have improved energy density by 11% compared to previous model. Also, a newly developed heat pump utilizing heat loss from the drive module and a radiative passenger heating device that reduces the heat load have realized a long driving range in the winter.
