Summary
This paper describes investigations of a novel "low emission" technology to achieve urban zero impact mobility for future diesel passenger car applications. In this context, the well-known concept of exhaust gas catalysts upstream of the turbocharger (pre-turbo system) is implemented in an innovative way on the hybridized powertrain. In combination with electrification the promising potential of lowest urban pollutant emissions is presented. An optimum in emissions-CO2 trade-off can be achieved without any disadvantages in driving dynamics. In conjunction with the potential use of regenerative fuels, this demonstrates a future powertrain system. The focus of the investigations is on the design and simulation of the exhaust system upstream of the exhaust gas turbocharger, development of novel catalyst technologies and implementation in the partially electrified powertrain. By relocating DeNOX-components upstream of the turbine of the exhaust gas turbocharger, the significantly higher temperature level of the exhaust gas is used for higher catalytic pollutant conversion. Furthermore, the integration into a hybrid architecture with an additional electric compressor ensures the dynamics of the investigated E-segment vehicle. In addition to basic investigations, such as thermodynamic conditions, ECU behavior and influences on the SCR system, the focus of the publication is on the presentation of results in relevant cycles and under RDE conditions. Compliance with future emission limits in real, especially urban, driving conditions is made possible in a safe and stable manner by this concept and demonstrated with results on the engine-in-the-loop test bed.
