Summary

In recent years, the drive train strategy of vehicle manufacturers has been largely dominated by the regulatory framework. The tank-to-wheel logic that applies in Europe in particular, combined with very ambitious fleet limits, resulted in a compulsion to expand the electric drive portfolio. This was accompanied by extensive government support measures, in particular tax relief or subsidies for infrastructure measures. These measures led to a more challenging assessment of the technology's attractiveness.

However, customer requirements and the resulting market behavior will lead to a new assessment of the overall situation by 2024 at the latest. In all major European economies, the market share of purely electric vehicles is well below 20% and predictions remain very challenging.
