Summary
Over the last decade, battery electric vehicles (BEVs) experienced dramatic technological advances. One of these advances is the fast charging capability of the utilized Lithium-ion battery systems inside the BEV. The most important reason for further improvements in this area is that once a battery energy threshold is surpassed, customers choose the BEV with the highest charge performance. Furthermore, if the consumer does not own a private charger, public fast charging becomes more attractive the faster the BEV can be charged.
The rapid development of battery electric vehicles has increased the demand for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) capable of superfast charging, providing the driver with several hundred kilometers of additional range in less than 10 minutes. However, designing battery cells that combine superfast charging capability with a high energy density required for BEV applications poses significant challenges, primarily due to the chemical and physical limitations of current LIB technology.
Overcoming these challenges requires innovative approaches to battery cell, electrode, and electrolyte design. In this paper, we present the solutions that leading battery cell manufacturers have found, using a detailed benchmark of a commercial 5C battery cell. Furthermore, a teardown analysis is performed. By using a wide range of analytical techniques on the cell materials, the key enablers for the superfast charging are identified.
