Summary
After the successful introduction of the 2,2l ECOTEC-engine with port fuel injection in 1999 a new variant of this engine family is going to be introduced into the market. The new 2,2l ECOTEC DIRECT all-aluminum engine will be Opel’s first engine with gasoline direct injection developed by FIAT-GM Powertrain. The development goal for this engine was to show highest possible economical performance while at the same time offering highest potential of fun to drive. Detailed analysis of different gasoline direct injection concepts lead to a system with variable inlet geometry which operates with stoichiometric airfuel mixture. Due to the high compression ratio of 12:1 and the high dilution tolerance, which was enabled by the variable inlet geometry, high fuel economy improvements could be demonstrated not only under steady state conditions. Advantages under transient conditions, which can be directly related to gasoline direct injection technology itself lead to an even higher fuel economy improvement. 6% fuel economy improvement is proven in the European driving cycle MVEG-B. Under WOT conditions rated power could be increased by 6% to 155 hp; but far more important is the increase in engine torque by 6-8% over the whole engine speed range in comparison to the PFI-version.
Lectures from the International Vienna Motor Symposium can be ordered from the Austrian Society of Automotive Engineers (ÖVK). Lectures can only be purchased in the form of the complete conference documents, individual lectures are not available.
When placing an order, please note the year/name of the event (e.g. "45th International Vienna Motor Symposium 2024") for the further ordering process.
Members of the Austrian Society of Automotive Engineers have access to all lectures of the International Vienna Motor Symposia.
