Summary

Politics and society agree: Far-reaching measures are needed in all industrial sectors to achieve the globally defined climate targets for CO2 reduction. The mobility sector is particularly challenged, and the targets there are more than ambitious. What role does hydrogen play in this? What are the future opportunities for the hydrogen engine as an alternative drive technology? And what factors determine the success of an efficient, modern and powerful hydrogen engine? KEYOU shares its view on this.

As promising as the hydrogen engine's potential is, system design is challenging - especially at the component level. Fuel system pressure, stationary injector flow, nozzle design and more. Several discussion points on hydrogen direct injection are currently open and controversial when looking from different industrial perspectives. PFI concepts show a higher degree of maturity, while DI approaches require further development steps, especially due to the large number of system’s degrees of freedom, which, on the other hand, also account for its performance.

KEYOU presents here an innovative solution approach at the system- and component level based on numerical and experimental investigations directly with components as well as with full engine runs at the test bench. A special focus was put on the critical NOx / Efficiency trade-off.
