Summary
Even in the Compact Class customers buy up-level powertrains considering not only fuel consumption and emissions but also looking for comfort and fun to drive. Technical features are just paid if the additional costs will be compensated over lifetime. Opel decided for gasoline engines up to 1.6l displacement to use consequently both, port deactivation and high EGR. The first engine in series production of that kind was the 1.6l Twinport Family 1 engine in the Opel Astra 2003. The integration of the acoustics requirements into the engine development from the beginning ensured the realization of the whole potential referring to combustion noise and mechanical noise, respectively. Thus, the engine could be improved compared to its former even though the boundary conditions were not easy.
