Summary

The proposals and scenarios discussed for the new Euro 7 legislation pose numerous challenges for the exhaust aftertreatment of combustion engines. Besides the further reduction of the limit values for the well-known pollutants, among other things

  • the expected tightening of cold-start requirements
  • limit values for previously unregulated pollutants such as N2O and NH3
  • the inclusions of the sub 23 nm particles and
  • higher demands on durability

represent new challenges, both for the catalyst technologies and the system application. In this article, some of these requirements and the effects on exhaust gas aftertreatment are examined. It becomes clear that the new requirements could lead to new, high-performance aftertreatment concepts. In this context, the latest trends in catalyst development are discussed. Particular attention is paid to solutions for improved cold-start performance. New GPF coatings with high filtration efficiency and catalyst coatings specially developed for gasoline applications for the conversion of NH3 are presented.

It is shown that future exhaust gas aftertreatment concepts are expected to become more complex. A central challenge for compliance with Euro 7 legislation is an optimized interaction of various catalyst components, integration into the system and its application.
