Summary

Following the 3.0ℓ 6-cylinder presentation at 40th Internationales Wiener Motoren symposium in 2019 and the 1.5ℓ 3-cylinder at the 41st edition in 2020, it is now time to introduce the 2.0ℓ 4-cylinder, the last member of the brand-new CSS (Cylinder Set Strategy) Diesel family fully developed by General Motors together with Punch-Torino as engineering service provider and manufactured by Opel/PSA. The entire CSS family range has been engineered with low emissions, efficiency, cost, performance and manufacturing flexibility as key requirements for the program, in view of application in the most environmentally stringent markets and on demanding applications. In this paper, we’ll focus on the approach applied to reduce the manufacturing complexity of the program, with significant cost and supply chain benefits, as well as on the specific technologies used to differentiate the new 2.0ℓ engine from competitors. In particular, the engine is the first of the CSS family to feature steel pistons for further reducing friction, and to employ extensive model-based controls for both air charging and exhaust aftertreatment systems. Eventually, the engine integration is described for its first two applications, the new Cadillac XT4 premium SUV and the new Opel Insignia midsize, both certified EU6D-full. The new 2.0ℓ Diesel on 2021 Opel Insignia has been able to achieve 108 gCO2/km NEDC, a value that puts it in direct competition with best-in-class gasoline full-hybrids.
